Thadingyut (Festival of Lights)

ThaDinGyut Festival of Lights celebrates the path to enlightenment with various forms of illumination. Mid-October is the end of monsoon season and of Buddhist lent.It is also the beginning of harvest—traditionally an occasion for community celebration.

In Burma, the three-day Festival of Lights is celebrated by illuminating homes and public buildings with candles and colored lights. Performances, food fairs, and games take place all night long in almost every neighborhood. It is also a formal occasion to pay respect to one’s parents and other elders of the community. Younger people thank the elders for their guidance and they ask for forgiveness for any transgression.

ThinGyan Associaiton usually celebrates the Festival of Lights in October or November in New York with theatrical performance and community cookout. The elders are also offered food and presents.
